Zentangle(R) is about filling spaces using patterns that start with a simple line and become more beautiful and seemingly complex as areas are filled. The process is appealing to graphics artists as well as those just learning to draw. If you don't think you can draw at all, tangling will show you different!
The Zentangle Method(R), created by artists Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas, is meditation achieved through pattern-making. A "Zentangle" is a drawing that looks complicated, but is built one line at a time. Simple tangles, or patterns, are combined in an unplanned way that grows and changes in amazing directions. With your mind engaged in drawing, your body relaxes. Anxiety and stress move to the back burner. Often, new insights are uncovered along with a sense of confidence in your creative abilities.
Learn the basics of Zentangle(R), techniques to incorporate color and shading to polish your tangles, and find over 100 new tangles to try, all inside Totally Tangled!

This book gives the basics, then jumps into the paradox of relaxing chaos. Yes. It is very hard to describe Zentangle! I designed this book to be a lot like one of my classes, with ideas and tips everywhere. But you can tune me out and just go for the patterns, that is just fine. :-)

- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2013I wanted to know what all of the Zentangle hubbub was about, so I decided to buy this one, as it had steps to creating tangles. Let me tell you, I've beat the CRAP out of this book. I have it folded back when I'm using it, minor moisture, stored in weird positions and more. Even if I have the book rolled up, it does to back to laying flat. The pages are really nice and thick, and the step by step on how to do tangles are well done.
FOR TYPE A PERSONALITIES: I know that the whole point of Zentangle is to "let go" and that "there is (are?) no such thing(s?) as mistake(s)." Personally, it makes me happy to be precise. It's fun for me to be precise. It makes me feel better to be precise. I even bought a hardcover notebook with grid lines so I can be more precise. Of course if I do make a mistake and I like it, I'll expand on that, but it's usually just an off shoot of what tangle I was trying to do anyway.
Maybe tangles aren't meant for type A personalities ;-)
-- I'm going to word this a few different ways because I don't know which version will make sense with readers.
Explanation #1:
Something that does make it difficult to be precise is that the step-by-step boxes aren't *EXACTLY* built off what the step was beforehand; there are small differences. What I do is take in and intently view all of the steps and the final completed tangle and make it the kind of perfect that I want it to be. If I literally and exactly did the step-by-step it wouldn't turn out EXACTLY like the final result of the tangle shown.
Explanation #2:
So you have 5 steps, and each step drawn is built on the step drawn before. I see that the step one design will not be drawn exactly on the step two picture, which elaborates on the first, and this continues at each step.
I think I know WHY they do that. It's to expand on the "it doesn't have to be perfect" concept, and if you're following the step by step you can see that the box with the step before it isn't EXACTLY like the one after it,
and if it's not 'just right' that's all that I see (only when I do things, not when other people do).
Everything is completely fine in the book. Personal preference, that's all. It does help me sleep. I've had sleep problems from childhood. Now, this isn't like a miracle drug or whatever, but it does make it a little easier to fall asleep.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2012I've been knitting and sewing for as long as I can remember, and lately the word "Zentangles" has popped up in a few different places so I decided to check and see what it was about. I chose this book honestly just for the cover - I loved it. I am not into art or drawing at all, so when I got the book I was kind of lost and wasn't really sure what to do with it. Then when I got to the back of the book, there were a few examples of Zentangles and the author had written "combine skills you already have with Zentangle". Next to that was an example of a drawing with buttons, ruffles and stitches, and right there and then a little lightbulb went off and I knew this was something I'd like to do. The way I see tangling in my mind is that I'm drawing fabric.
The book is not written just for sewing and things at all, though. That was just a tiny part of the book that made it all click for me. There were other examples of hobbies and interests that may be what inspires you.
Zentangle is supposed to be very meditative and relaxing, and I have to agree with that. At first I was really stressed out when I tried it, but as I got more used to following the patterns, I really do notice that I'm relaxed when I'm drawing. Most of the patterns kind of follow each other's lines and doing that is very calming. Once you've picked out a pattern to do, you really don't have to think anymore and can just relax.
As far as the instructions in the book, it's pretty easy to follow. There are Zentangle patterns and how to draw them all though the book, mixed in with examples of drawings. The beginning of the book tells all about Zentangle and lists the supplies you'll need. The beauty of it is that she tells you really all you need is paper, pencils and black marking pens. There are other things you can do with Zentangle like add color and do some blending, but that doesn't happen until you are ready to get fancier with your work. This author has a really nice website, a few other books and some videos on You Tube. I am glad that I chose this book to get me started on Zentange and have already purchased two more of her books. I like being able to follow the same person when I'm doing a craft and I think Sandy Steen Bartholomew is a great choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something A Little Different
This is a small book that is just packed with ideas. The author shows you how to create the tangles and then gives ideas to help you practice them. I felt that some of the tangles were a bit much for a beginner but as you work your way through it is not as difficult as it first looks. I find that some books tend to give you the same tangle but with slight variations. I found that this book tries to give you a variety so that you don't loose interest after awhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Schönes Büchlein mit vielen Anregungen

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Great Inspiration
I bought two Zentangle books at the same time and this was by far the best. The other was "Zentangle Basics", the less said about that, the better.
While the tangles included in this aren't the easiest, the result is totally amazing. I've had to practise some of the tangles in this book in order to get them right and found myself creating new ones.
Sandy Bartholomew seems to favour Zendoodles, as opposed to the strictly regimented zentangles. The results are beautiful, inspiring artistic creations. The tangles needed to put these together are included in the book.
To get the most from this book, you may need to be artistically inclined, or at least enthusiastic. If you just want very basic zentangles, go on line, do a search, then print out the "official" zentangles, or buy the "Zentangle Basics" books, which some do find helpful, but the one I had just wasn't for me.
Can Totally recommend this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally tangled - Bello bello
Libretto di una cinquantina di pagine, in lingua inglese.
Base dello Zentangle, descritto in modo schematico. Si parte dalla illustrazione dei materiali da utilizzare e ai vari schemi per apprendere il metodo.
Molto schematico ed intuitivo con tantissimi modelli da base a più avanzati.
