Art Journaling Sojourn

Deep dive into all aspects of art journaling with this 6 session course with Mixed Mixed Art Studio in Mt Waverley (see here for details). This small class will take you through the key elements of art journaling, what you need to get started and how to discover your own style. Each session will be based on a theme yet will adapt to the requirements of the class.

The class is in-person, with a small group and is fully supported through a private Facebook group, so you can share your work and ask questions. Each class runs for 2 hours over 6 sessions to be held fortnightly. You can choose from an afternoon class (1pm to 3pm) or evening class (7pm to 9pm).

Course outline

  • Session 1 Art journaling foundations; review materials and getting started on backgrounds
  • Session 2 Art journaling first steps; adding colour and shape
  • Session 3 Art journaling visual texture and interest
  • Session 4 Focus; adding a focal point
  • Session 5 Ways with words; 101 ways to add words into your art journaling
  • Session 6 Finishing touches; pens, markers and embellishments

Supplies to Bring

– 2 or more Art Journals; whichever brand and size you prefer
needs to be mixed media quality paper
(suggest 9”x12” Dylusions journal)
– Gel Medium: any brand (except Mod Podge)
– Ephemera; old book pages, sheet music, dictionary, printed tissue or magazine images
– Acrylic paints; 3 to 4 colours (all warm or all cool) plus white
– Gesso; any brand
– Various paint brushes and water pot
– Stencils
– focal images
– stamps and block
– black ink
– markers in black and white
– scissors
– baby wipes or cloth
– apron or painty clothes
– other items may be added as course progresses
