Using stamps to add interest and texture in our Mixed Media Art is yet another way of creating layers. Part of creating Mixed Media Art, whether its bringing together a mixed media painting, a collage or creating a background, is all about creating layers. Sometimes these layers flow; other times we need to stop and think to find alternatives that stretch our artistic ventures. Here we will explore a range of methods and techniques that can help in creating layers within your mixed media art.

Stamping
Additional interest and layering can be added to our Mixed Media Art using art stamps. The challenge here is to consider the surface you are stamping on to.
Stamping works best onto a smooth surface, so plan to add stamping before adding impasto medium or bulky embellishments. Both rubber and foam stamps come in a huge range of images and wording; some of my favourite for mixed media art are the grungy images and scruffy text; a checkered pattern and small writing. Rubber stamps work best with ink and a solvent based ink, like Stazon, to make sure the image won’t run when layers of paint or impasto medium are added.
Foam stamps can be used with inks but for mixed media work, foam stamps are great for using with paints; I love my Making Memories shapes and swirls. I will use a paintbrush to add a little paint onto the stamp. If you are not happy with the result (allowing for your grungy tolerance) you can quickly remove it with a damp cloth or blend it into the background, then try again.
As opposed to “normal” art stamping on greeting cards or scrapbook layouts, with mixed media, I stick to basic colours and don’t plan to colour images in. Fine detailed stamps and photo stamps would also be lost amongst the layering, so keep those aside for other projects.
As you’ve heard me say before – experiment with the stamps you have; which ones are good for adding texture and interest to the background? Which ones can we use as a feature? And try different colours – use a contrasting colour to make the image stand out. Use a lighter shade of the background to add a subtle feature.
Happy layering!
